What do I need to create HTML?
You don't need any special equipment or software to create HTML.
In fact, you probably already have everything you need:
- A Computer (duhhh).
- A Text editor. OK, anything better then Notepad. I suggest PSPad.
- A Web Browser. I mean, a good one, like: Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome...
Do I need to be online?
No, you do not need to be online to create web pages.
You can create web pages on your local machine.
You only need to go online when you want to publish your web page to the web.
We will see that later.
Creating a Web Page
When you create a web page you will usually do something like this:
- Create an HTML file
- Type some HTML code
- View the result in your browser
- Repeat the last 2 steps (if necessary)
OK, lets do it easily.
If you want to create a test web on your own computer, just copy the 3 files below to your desktop.
(Right click on each link, and select "save target as" or "save link as")
After you have copied the files, you can double-click on the file called "mainpage.html" and see your first web site in action.
Note: This particular example uses HTML5!
HTM or HTML Extension?
When you save an HTML file, you can use either the .htm or the .html extension.
Using .htm is a habit from the past, when the software only allowed three letters in file extensions.
With new software it is perfectly safe to use .html.
